We had heard good things about both restaurants at The Nines, so decided to try Departure. Was really excited because of the top floor location and a colleague's recommendation. The view didn't disappoint. We were seated right in front of the window with a nice view of downtown. The food, unfortunately, was a bit mixed. We got three sushi rolls, the Suzuki, the Spicy Tuna, and the Biko Salmon. The Biko Salmon was really good and we ended up ordering another of these. For the Suzuki and the Spicy Tuna, it's was almost like they tried to get too fancy or too unique. They were either just average (Suzuki) or odd (Spicy Tuna). The Spicy Tuna almost tasted a little flowery and I think it was the furikake. But the extra flavor ended up ruining the roll. We also had the Lani's Poke, which was good, but was a very small serving. And then the Blistered Shishitos were good, in my opinion, but others in the party didn't like them. The Yuzu Mayo made it for me. For dinner, I had the Alaskan Halibut. That was good, definitely a Thai twist to it with the coconut yuzu. And then we tried a version of the Wagyu Ishiyaki - that was fantastic, as expected. Melts in your mouth. So good. For dessert, I had this Mochi thing (not sure how else to explain it). It was just the outside, gooey part, no ice cream. It was interesting and definitely unique. Or course I ate the whole thing, so must not have been bad! Servers were good, friendly, and attentive. It was a good experience, overall, especially given the view. And I'm sure other items on the menu are great, we just didn't give them a try. But from what we ordered, it was about 50-50.

Came for a birthday dinner. Left disappointed. Love the ambiance. Delicious drinks, especially Lucky #7. We got sushi and the steak. Both excellent. Rice tots were inedible. They removed that from our bill though. The big disappointment was service. Our server took forever to check on us. I wanted a second drink and my daughter wanted more tea. It took him 40 minutes to come to our table. When I finally got my drink, he slammed it on the table - I wish I was exaggerating - mumbled something and walked off in a rush. It was another -5 minutes for my daughter’s tea. When he brought our next dish, same thing! Spammed it on the table and walked off. It was really odd. Finally, we waited for an hour after finishing our dinner for our server to return. I had hoped for dessert but by the time he came, it was 10pm (started at 745)and I was ready for bed. Not the best ending to my birthday meal but not a huge deal. I did communicate with him that I had hoped for dessert but it was getting late and he offered dessert to go - however, i declined, as I was worried it might take another 30 minutes. He did seem to genuinely feel bad and help the matter - but I just wish he didn’t make us feel so weird and ignored the rest of the meal.

We had an exceptional dinner and an evening at the Departure. We started with oysters and mussels, both incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared, followed by a hamachi roll that was delicate, balanced, and full of flavor. The highlight of the night was the whole duck. We didn’t realize it needed to be pre-ordered and felt incredibly lucky that there was one left. It was absolutely worth it, served several different ways, each preparation thoughtful and delicious, and clearly handled with care and expertise. The ambiance and service set the tone for an elevated evening. Jason was attentive, knowledgeable, and perfectly paced, making us feel both welcomed and well cared for without ever being intrusive. Add great company to outstanding food and service, and it became a night to remember.

A truly classy, upscale bar downtown that offers a wonderfully diverse selection spirits and cuisine! It's definitely the place to be for a sophisticated evening. The staff there are incredibly knowledgeable and always attentive to your needs. I felt so well taken care of during my visit. You absolutely must check it out if you're in the city. As a bonus they have great views of pioneer square from their rooftop patio.
