Food was tasty, we tried the jambalaya, seafood gumbo, red beans and rice, and a po boy freda sandwich. When we first entered we were handed a menu and had to look where to order from on our own, we waited at the register for several minutes with employees paying around is not never acknowledging us, we felt invisible for a bit. Decor is full of framed photos that seem to have accumulated over time. Once we had our food, we were better attended to.

A true New Orleans classic, very simple, very traditional, and exactly what you expect when you come here. I tried the Famous Ferdi Special (shredded roast beef) with sides of Red Beans & Rice and Jerry’s Creole Jambalaya. Everything was good, full of flavor, and definitely gives you that authentic local experience. That said, it’s a bit heavy for my personal taste, but that’s also part of the New Orleans style of cooking, rich and comforting. The vibe is casual, no-frills, and all about the food—nothing fancy, just classic dishes done right. Overall: ✨ Very typical New Orleans experience ✨ Flavorful, hearty food ✨ Simple, casual atmosphere If you want to try something iconic and truly local, this is a solid stop. When you go… tell them Flavia Sent You 💋

First off, expect a line out the door. Second, make sure you know what you are ordering before you get inside the building. Pull up a menu on your phone or, as you get closer to the door, they usually pass down menus to peruse. They are not patient with you if you ask questions at the cash register. Our party of six sampled a variety of meals including the combination platter (shrimp creole, jambalaya, red beans & rice, potato salad and green beans), the John G sandwich, pancakes, a side of roast beef, Mae's file gumbo, bread pudding, a biscuit, a nugget kid meal, and scrambled eggs. The kids were just meh with their food (nugget meal, scrambled eggs, and pancake), but they're picky so I kind of roll my eyes when they're not excited about food. The adults, however, were eager to tuck in to a sampling of all the things. (Our group are food sharers - we try everyone's dishes and discuss). As excited as we were, we all ended up ... underwhelmed. The meat in the sandwich (and the side of roast beef) had good flavor, but was a bit dry. All the dishes on the combination platter (save the potato salad) tasted ... weirdly sweet? I was expecting a more hearty savory flavor with maybe a bit of spice/heat particularly in the jambalaya and shrimp creole ... but alas, no. Even the green beans tasted as if they had sugar added. The sauce for the bread pudding was delightful, although the pudding itself had little bits of fruit in it which one of our crew did not prefer - so be warned. The best thing I had was the biscuit, and folks, lemme tell you, that biscuit was like heaven ... especially with the homemade jam they sent along with it. Altogether, I probably wouldn't go back unless I was going for breakfast in which case ... give me biscuits. Give me ALL the biscuits.

I ordered the Fried Gulf Shrimp Po'Boy and a cup of Jerry's Jambalaya. There was a 20-minute wait for the jambalaya, so I received a complimentary slice of Pecan Pie. Everything I ate was excellent! The jambalaya was my favorite of the three items with healthy chunks of protein and the perfect heat level. On my next visit, I want to try the Gumbo and Fried Chicken. Al, my server, was friendly and readily available with a refill or to respond to any of my requests. If you want to leave a tip, you'll need to have cash on hand because you pay for your meal up front. I appreciated Al being proactive with offering me a complimentary dessert when there was a long wait time for my jambalaya. It helped stave off any potential frustration. I love the ambiance of this place. Its history is covered on the walls and they do a great job taking care of frequent local customers and new tourists. I loved eating at Mother's Restaurant and will eat here again.
