I cannot sing high enough praise for this place. We arrived 20 minutes before the opening time - and we were greeted warmly and told to pick any table to sit! The place looks/feels so German that if you ignore Teslas and Waymos buzzing by, you can believe that you are someplace in Kaiserslautern. The food is superb - we had a herring salad and a schnitzel, and the manager explained every detail (what is Schmand? It's sour cream :), she accommodated my partner's request to serve sauerkraut on the side - and it was delicious, dotted with some fine bacon bits. The herring salad was an absolute yum! I very much hope to get it again and again because it's impossible to find this type of herring on the West Coast - briny, light, succulent, not-too-salty and impeccably fresh. The schnitzel was delicious, too, that combo of crispy and soft that defines a good schnitzel. We had some German beer that was very good and the Belgian Duchess Cherry Ale that tastes like ambrosia :) Very soon the place was packed - it's popular with locals and tourists alike. The final touch: when we were leaving, both the skinny elegant lady manager and the owner said good bye and shook our hands. I really don't know how could any place be more welcoming :) Oh! Check out the coolest postcards in the restrooms!

The food was amazing! Everything tasted super fresh and flavorful. We ordered the Jagerschnitzel, potato pancakes, and salad with beets, potato salad, etc. It all went very well together. The mushroom gravy was especially good, and the spatzle was great comfort food. The restaurant is very loud but cozy with communal seating. The low lights, plain wooden tables and glass mugs give it the real German pub feel. I’d definitely come back!

Fairly authentic German restaurant (verified by my German friend!). Serves many popular homemade style German dishes like schnitzel, potato pancakes, and pretzels, as well as some other dishes popular in surrounding countries like Sachertorte (a delicious Viennese cake!). For beverages, it offers authentic German beer and other drinks. It has a large outdoor seating area that's a good option when it's warm enough. Indoor seating is all communal, so if you come here on a date, you'll likely be sitting next to another couple or two. They only take reservations for groups of 6 or 7, all other group sizes are walk-in only. The acoustics aren't great inside, so it's very loud and it can be difficult to have a conversation with the person you came with.

A classic German restaurant with a friendly ambiance! On the recommendation of one of my daughter’s friends, we tried out Suppenkuche located in the safe and revitalized Hayes Valley District , reasonably close to the Civic Center area, on my last night in San Francisco. Both of us were delighted with the experience. Even from the wait outside, one feels the welcoming positive energy of the place. Patrons waiting for a spot were friendly and talkative, adding to the community vibe. When entering, one feels as if one has been magically transported to a Bavarian restaurant in an earlier era. One is seated at large tables along with other guests, and the staff is attentive, and we received superb service and recommendations from Victoria. The menu consists of traditional German options with an upscale and modern twist. Even though the place was packed the owner came by a couple of times to chat and check up on our experience. A small bar at the side of the dining room adds to the classic German restaurant ambiance. Even the men's room displays the classic German beer house feel with a large wooden latch secure the door adding to the old-world authenticity.

Had a great time sitting at the bar with a loud atmosphere on a friday night. We ordered a wide selection of beers. They had great food. The salads provided with the entree were a bit on the sweeter side. Well worth it for the great hospitality and delicious food.
